I'm posting this here because the Beachcomber does not think that there are enough ties to the island to mention this veterans support organization in the paper. Though there are veterans, and parents of veterans living on the island who may be interested in learning about the services we are bringing to the West Coast, the newspaper has decided that it is not of interest to islanders.
My wife and I lived on Vashon for over six years in the 1990s, our children went to school there and still have friends there (including Kieran, in whose memory we are doing this project), I worked as a reporter for the Beachcomber prior to becoming editor of the Tacoma Daily Index and commuting on the Rhodedendron every day, we went to church on the island, I performed in musical groups on the island, was involved in charitable work on the island, etc., etc.
I'm hoping this will reach those on the island who may be interested in supporting our veterans, or who may know OIF/OEF veterans who may be interested in the retreats we will be providing.
Thanks for your support,
Steve Brown

Former Vashon Island Couple Launches Veteran Support Organization

A new organization dedicated to providing support for combat veterans and their spouses on the West Coast, has been launched in California by a Yucca Valley couple who lived on Vashon Island in the 1990s. The organization, Phoenix Project West, was formed by Delphine Lucas and Steve Brown to bring the highly effective Phoenix Project retreats to the West Coast. Offices for the organization are based at Brown's business office in Twentynine Palms, California.

Phoenix Project retreats are week-long specialized retreats developed for returning combat veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and their spouses. The retreats are specifically designed to provide the opportunity for these military couples to reconnect, and learn a variety of methods for better communication, stress management, and a new appreciation of what each has undergone through deployments. Several hundred couples have benefited from the retreats held in Texas over the past two years. Phoenix Project West will bring these retreats to Southern California and the West Coast.

Phoenix Project West (www.phoenixprojectwest.org) is an operation of the U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation (www.uswoundedsoldiers.com, www.phoenixprojectretreat.org), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible. Phoenix Project West is just beginning its fundraising and awareness raising planning for 2008. Groups or individuals who would like to host, sponsor, or participate in an event to support Phoenix Project West, are urged to contact the organization. The retreats require a specially trained staff with a military background. There is no cost for veterans and their spouses to attend a retreat, and retreats are paid entirely by private donations. There is no government funding for this program.

"Delphine and I have decided to launch Phoenix Project West in memory of our son Kieran, who had worked on one of the Phoenix Project Retreats on the day he died, just a little more than a year ago," Brown said. "We hope that with the help of people like yourselves, we can begin to provide these retreats for our young men and women who volunteered to serve our country. These are entirely non-political, and there is really no downside to the project.

"Those of us who either are Vietnam veterans, or who know them, know that often, the stresses of combat continue to take a toll on those who have experienced it for decades afterwards," he explained. "Helping our troops and their spouses reunite (divorce and seperation rates for returning OIF and OEF combat veterans is approaching 80%, and suicide and homelessness rates are high as well), and learn positive ways to create a better relationship for themselves, each other, and their children, brings us all the benefits of a healthier military population, and community."

Phoenix Project West Announces Swashbuckling Fundraiser for Valentine's 2008
This Valentine's Day, Party - For a Great Cause - Like It's 1692!

Phoenix Project West coordinators, Steve Brown and Delphine Lucas of Yucca Valley, California, have announced the organization's first big fundraising and awareness raising event for 2008 - The Port Royal Grand Buccaneers Ball. The big Valentine's event of the season in the hi-desert, the Buccaneers Ball, scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, February 16, will be hosted at the Yucca Valley Community Center at 57090 29 Palms Highway, Yucca Valley, though those attending the event might think they are in Port Royal, Jamaica, circa 1692 - during the pinnacle of piracy's golden age upon the Spanish Main.

The Ball will feature a spectacular pyrate's feast, with treats from the Caribbean, along with live pirate music by There Be Pirates!, Southern California's premiere pirate jam band, dance, authentic pirate games of chance, and much more. There will be great silent auction items available, as well as professional pirate re-enactors, and a presentation on the successful Phoenix Project retreats for combat veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and their spouses.

Phoenix Project West was formed to expand the successful Phoenix Project retreats operated by the U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas. For about the past two years, Phoenix Project retreats have helped hundreds of combat veterans and their spouses through specially tailored week-long retreats that reconnect military couples and help provide them with tools for dealing with the stresses of combat and deployment, and better communications.

"All politics aside, with up to 80% of combat veterans becoming divorced, and with a high rate of homelessness and suicide, I think we need to support those who volunteer to serve our country," Brown said. "Phoenix Project retreats provide tools for a better future to both combat veterans and their spouses and families. They help both the veterans and their spouses better understand and appreciate what they have each endured through deployments and combat. The veteran has had to cope with the constant stresses of life in a combat zone, while often the spouse at home is balancing work, children, and budget - alone. Our retreats, designed and operated to specifically meet the needs of combat veterans and their spouses, bring the couples together and give them tools to build a better future for themselves and their families."

Phoenix Project West is bringing the successful Phoenix Project retreats from Texas to California and the West Coast. Phoenix Project retreats are offered at no charge to OIF and OEF combat veterans and their spouses. Phoenix Project West is entirely funded through private donations and receives no government funding. Phoenix Project West operates as a branch of the U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas.
